The name Kardeş Türküler was originally coined for a musical performance by Bosphorus University Folk Art Club's musicians in 1993, a concert made up of Anatolian folk songs performed in their original languages, mainly Turkish, Kurdish, Azerbaijani and Armenian. In time the Kardeş Türküler project was extended to cover a wider cultural basis, and the group added Laz, Georgian, Circassian, Gypsy, Macedone and Alavite folk songs among others to their repertoire, with a distinct interpretation that gradually grew to be recognized as the group's original sound. In summer 1995, the group joined forces with other artists to found the Bosphorus Performance Arts Company and began to appear regularly in festivals and cultural activities. At the same time, they went in the studio with soloist Feryal Öney and Azarbaijani musicians for the Hardasan / Azarbaijani songs album. A year later, in June 1997, the Kardeş Türküler album came out featuring a selection from the musical heritage of the Anatolia-Mesopotamia region, and soon the name was firmly associated with the group in popular mind. In 1999 another album, Doğu, came out to much acclaim both at home and abroad. Most recently, Kardeş Türküler has written and performed Vizontele's original scores.
